Prince wrote "Nothing Compares 2 U" for his cleaning person. She took a leave of absence--and the adjustment was so difficult, it made Prince think of a lost romantic connection.
It's been seven hours and thirteen days--
Since you took your love away.
I go out every night and sleep all day--
Since you took your love away.
Because of his talent, Prince is able to see himself as a character--to track his own moves throughout a lengthy odyssey. We watch Prince dining in fancy restaurants, seeking meaningless sex, sleeping through the day. The plot thickens when Prince visits a shrink--such is the depth of his post-cleaning-lady sadness. (The visit accomplishes nothing.)
Often, songs encourage us to perk up and feel empowered--but it's the high-decibel whininess of Prince that really comforts me. This guy is a mess--start to finish. Who could fail to relate?
